Where is Little Pudding Cottage?

Private and secluded with no close neighbours, Little Pudding Cottage (Pontbren-Ddu) is at the head of the Chwefru valley, just 3.5 miles from the 12th century Red Lion pub in Llanafan Fawr (click here for the exact location of the cottage). The cottage gate also leads directly onto Rhos-Saith - 17,500 acres of National Trust moorland. Three of the highest summit cairns and trig-points in the Cambrian Mountains are accessible from the cottage, all within approximately an hour and a half's walk.

A half-hour’s drive away are the Elan Valley Reservoirs – an area of outstanding natural beauty, with an interesting history. Gigrin Red Kite Feeding Centre near Rhayader is a wonderful day out for adults and children alike and ensures kites are frequent visitors overhead at Little Pudding Cottage. Birdlife in the area is on magnificent display year round, with murmurations of starlings around the cottage itself, and buzzards and kestrels aplenty.

Rhayader itself is a charming small and friendly town, with shops, pubs and cafes galore, and one of the best butchers we have ever tried, while just 9 miles away is Builth Wells, a lovely small town with restaurants, unusual shops, a theatre/cinema, swimming pool and sports centre. Also 9 miles away is the stylish Victorian spa town of Llandrindod Wells, which also has the area’s largest supermarket.

Other local attractions throughout the year within easy reach are The Royal Welsh Show, held in Builth Wells, the Brecon Jazz Festival in August, and the Abergavenny Food Festival in December. Llanwrtyd Wells, billed as the smallest town in Wales, is just down the road, and has a fine restaurant and annual bogsnorkelling event! The famous Hay Festival of Literature takes place every Summer, and a wonderful array of shops. With pony trekking, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons all accessible, Little Pudding Cottage offers a lovely refuge from the daily grind, yet is close to a huge variety of interesting attractions and activities.

There are numerous walks detailed at the cottage, as well as tourist information on cycling, fishing, gardens, activities and what’s on in the local area.
